Turkey Fan Mounts and Bird Taxidermy

A turkey fan mount is the simplest way to keep a spring bird. The tail fan is dried and spread, the beard and spurs are mounted with it, and the whole thing goes on a carved wood plaque. It hangs anywhere and costs a fraction of a full bird mount.
Craig also mounts full turkeys, ducks, geese, pheasants, and grouse. Bird work is about feather placement and pose. A flying mallard, a strutting tom, or a standing pheasant each need the feathers groomed and set so the bird looks like it is moving.
Migratory birds require the right federal and state paperwork. Keep your license and any required tags with the bird and we will go over it at drop-off.
When This Is the Right Mount
- A spring turkey you want to remember without a full mount.
- A banded or trophy duck or goose from the Lake Michigan shoreline or a local marsh.
- A pheasant or grouse from a Wisconsin or Illinois upland hunt.
- A full strutting or flying turkey mount for a larger space.

Field care
Do not wring the neck or field dress a bird you plan to mount. Keep the feathers dry and clean. For a fan mount, cut the tail off at the base with the fan intact and keep the beard and spurs.

Freeze it
Slide the bird head-first into a plastic bag, keep the feathers smooth, and freeze. Fans can be frozen the same way.

Drop-off and pose
Craig checks feather condition and goes over plaque styles for fans or pose options for full mounts.

Mount and pickup
Fans are dried, spread, and set on the plaque with beard and spurs. Full birds are formed, groomed, and finished.
Field Care Before Drop-Off
- Keep the bird dry. Wet feathers and blood are hard to clean.
- Do not gut a bird you plan to mount.
- Fan mount: cut the tail at the base, keep the beard and both spurs.
- Bag it smooth and freeze. Bring your license and any tags.

Pricing and Turnaround
Every animal is different, so Craig quotes each mount after inspecting it at drop-off. Hide condition, size, pose, and base all change the work. Call the shop for a quote or bring the animal in.
A 50% deposit holds your place in the queue. Cash or check only. The shop works first-in, first-out and does not offer rush service. You get a specific completion month before you leave, and a call when the mount is ready.
